In-person Get together- Sat, Oct 29th –

Our next in-person get together is at the Wando Mount Pleasant Library on Saturday, October 29th. We have a meeting room reserved from 11:00am – 12:30pm to make some cards.

If you can bring blank note cards, that would be appreciated. Please also bring markers, colored pencils, scrapbooking supplies, etc..

The whole purpose of this is to spread kindness, not make works of art.

Please message hello [at] bekindcharleston.org to let us know you’re coming.

Card Request – One80 Place

We have another organization to add to our recipient list.

One80Place, located downtown, serves the homeless community in Charleston. (For those of you who have lived here a while, you may know it by the former name of Crisis Ministries).

Similar to Hope to Home, they also provide move-in kits for clients transitioning from the shelter to a home. The messages in our cards can be similar to what you write for Hope to Home. The goal is to offer encouraging messages of support for recipients as they have a fresh start.

I suggest not sealing the individual envelopes. This will make it easy for the staff to review the cards before distributing and/or to add a specific recipient’s name.

Yes, the pandemic is still a thing. But we’re still going to get together in-person in Mount Pleasant this Saturday from 10:00am – 11:00am to make some cards. (Obviously, if you’re sick, coughing, or diagnosed with anything contagious – such as covid obviously – please don’t show up.)

If you have blank cards, markers, colored pencils, scrapbooking supplies, etc.., bring them with you. If you don’t have any supplies, that’s no problem. Just bring a friendly face and use whatever I have.

The whole purpose of this is to spread kindness, not make works of art so everyone is welcome. Can you draw a heart? Yes? You’re qualified then and we’re happy to have the help with cardmaking.

Please message hello [at] bekindcharleston.org for location and to let us know you’re coming. (And if you’re weirded out about walking into a room of strangers, the group will be small and most people won’t know each other so don’t freak. It’s also not cliquey. I don’t do cliques.)

Card Request – Hope to Home

Here’s a great opportunity for one all-volunteer organization to help another.

Hope to Home serves people who are working their way out of poverty, domestic violence situations, and homelessness by providing basic furnishings for free as they move into a home.

You can help by providing encouraging messages of support for recipients as they have a fresh start. Cards are included with their move-in kits. (This may be a great opportunity to get your kids involved in drawing pictures of home on blank cards for you to write messages!)

Group event – May 27th

A group of us met on May 27th to work on cards. We completed about 25 during our time together. I confess I did better with creating than I did with writing since I was chatting with the other attendees! (I’ll need to write my notes at home. )

Now that I know there’s enough interest – both working as a group and individually – I’m opening up the form to request cards. If you’re interested in creating cards, please fill out this form.

Several people have offered to help financially with this project. While I really appreciate the offer, I won’t take anything at this time. If I do down the road, I want to be very transparent. (I’ll start tracking any costs and we can figure that out later for those who are interested in contributing.)

Please note that any cards you create and send from home are a HUGE contribution! By being part of this, you are already graciously giving your time by creating cards and your finances by buying stamps when you send cards from your home.
